Simple Rules for Healthy Eating

Here are 7 simple rules for healthy living. No nutrients are demonized, while at the same time none will be held up as miracles. These recommendations make sense to us and they’ve helped us immensely.

1) Get as much nutrition as possible from a variety of completely unprocessed foods.
These include fruits and vegetables but can also include meat, fish, poultry and eggs that have not been cooked, prepared or altered in any way. Aim to consume brown rice over white rice and whole grains over refined grains.

Though there’s no concrete evidence that even the most processed foods are dangerous but we should keep consumption at a minimum because processed foods like cookies, chips, white bread and cereals are stuffed with calories.

2) Eat as much home-cooked food as possible, which should be prepared according to Rule 1.
Eating at home allows you to choose the ingredients, which make it much easier to avoid processed food. You choose the flavors you prefer and you will find that you’re much less likely to stuff yourself silly if you eat home-cooked food.

3)Salt and fats are essential for food preparation, so use it!
Salt and fat aren’t bad things. They are often essential in making food tasty and satisfying. Seasoning is what makes most vegetables delicious. So like most things in life, use salt and fats in moderation, use what you need, don’t be afraid of them, but don’t go crazy with them either.

4) When you do eat out, try to eat at restaurants that follows Rule 1
If you want to eat out, try find a spot that create all their dishes from unprocessed ingredients. Just remember to follow Rule 1 when you’re eating out; some processed food is going to be fine, but try to keep it to a minimum.

5) Drink Mostly water, but some alcohol, coffee and other beverages are fine.
You’ll find studies that shows everything either prevents or causes cancer – alcohol and coffee included. With conjecture in the pros & cons of most beverages, we support moderate consumption of most beverages.

6) Treat all beverages with calories in them as you would alcohol
Drinks with calories are fine in moderation, you should have them because you like them, but you shouldn’t consume them as if you need them.

7) Eat with other people, especially people you care about, as often as possible
This is arguably the most important rule because it has benefits beyond those of nutrition. When you’re with people you care about, it’ll make you more likely to cook. Because you enjoy their company, you’re more likely to eat more slowly in order to spend more time with them. Eating food with loved ones makes people happy.
